The Red Shoes is Terry's latest collaboration with Matthew Bourne following Lord of the Flies, Sleeping Beauty, Dorian Gray, Edward Scissorhands, The Car Man (Evening Standard Award: Best Musical) and Play Without Words, for which they shared the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.
He started his professional composing at the National Theatre where he had been an experienced music director and orchestrator, initially as co-orchestrator of the multi-award winning Guys and Dolls, the National’s first musical. In addition to his original music for NT productions, Terry has composed scores for the RSC and many theatres in London and elsewhere. He has written 2 musicals: The Birds, commissioned by the Istanbul City Theatre, which ran for 4 years, and Kes! The Musical for Bolton’s Octagon Theatre and York's Theatre Royal.
The films Terry has conducted and/or orchestrated include Florence Foster Jenkins, Youth (Best Song nomination, Oscars 2016 for David Lang), Mr. Turner (nominated for Best Original Score, Oscars 2015 for Gary Yershon), Keeping Rosy, W.E. (nominated Best Original Score for Abel Korzeniowski, Golden Globes), The King’s Speech (Best Motion Picture, Academy Awards), The Illusionist (nominated Best Animated Feature Film, Academy Awards), The Nutcracker in 3D (Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D, Razzie Awards), Brideshead Revisited, Another Year (nominated Best British Film, BAFTA), Happy-Go-Lucky (nominated Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, Golden Globes), Kinky Boots, and Shakespeare in Love (Best Motion Picture, Best Music etc, Oscars 1999). He conducted Renée Fleming in Verdi and Bellini for the film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Mira Nair’s film of Vanity Fair featured Terry's dance music. He was Music Director for Florence Foster Jenkins, working closely with Meryl Streep and Simon Helberg. He also coached Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn (nominated Best Actress in a Leading Role, Oscars 2012) and Michael Caine for his conducting role in Youth (Best Actor, European Film Awards 2015).
Original music for TV includes Matthew Bourne’s Christmas and adapting his score for The Car Man. Terry’s songs for Tipping the Velvet gained him a BAFTA nomination.
Amongst the music Terry has conducted for TV are Tutankhamun, Indian Summers, The Go-Between, Henry V, The Lost Prince, Shooting the Past, Stick Man, Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo and the Gruffalo’s Child.
