Overview
Rowland has been associated with AMP/New Adventures since the early 1990s, having orchestrated Town And Country, Nutcracker! and Swan Lake and composed an original score for the BBC2 ballet Drip.
Rowland has created many varied orchestrations of ballet scores for international dance companies including The Birmingham Royal Ballet, The Royal Ballet of the Netherlands, Ballet Jorgen, The Atlanta Ballet and the Washington Ballet's 2014 production of Swan Lake with Misty Copeland.He has arranged and orchestrated many shows and cast albums including Over My Shoulder and Robert Sherman's Bumblescratch and A Spoonful of Sherman. With the director Stewart Nicholls, he has created performance versions and reconstructed orchestrations of partially "lost" musicals, including Sail Away, Popkiss, The Matchgirls and Grab Me a Gondola.Some of his concert music is published by Edition Peters, including his Requiem, composed for Dame Sarah Connolly, which has been performed in Sacramento, St. Petersburg and many places in between. The choral anthem We Will Remember Them has received multiple performances by various ensembles at venues as diverse as the Scottish Parliament and the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Among his 700-plus Television credits as composer, he is probably best known for the children's series Cloudbabies and 64 Zoo Lane, though he also orchestrated and arranged music for series such as Endeavour and Families at War. Rowland has twice been a judge for the Ivor Novello Awards and is a winner of the British Film Institute's Anthony Asquith Award (now a BAFTA). He is a collector of player pianos and related instruments and has recently been appointed as a Trustee of The Musical Museum in London.
