The Matthew Bourne Collection
A rich and sumptuous collection which brings together five landmark Matthew Bourne productions from 2015 - 2020.
For more than 30 years Matthew Bourne has been creating, choreographing and directing original award-winning dance performances. With his trade-mark story telling, his shows with his New Adventures company are thrilling and evocative reinterpretations of classic, much-loved tales.
The Car Man is an exciting and entertaining show based on Bizet’s Carmen re-invented as a delightful and dangerous vision of small-town America. Set in a war-torn London, Cinderella is a heart-stopping fairy tale of love and loss during the horrors of the Blitz. Swan Lake is an audacious, witty and emotive re-imagining of a classic ballet featuring a menacing male ensemble of dancer. This much-loved show turned tradition upside down. Based on Shakespeare’s tale of love and conflict, Romeo + Juliet bursts with youth and vitality in a timeless story of repressed emotions and teenage discovery. The Red Shoes is a triumphant adaptation of Hans Andersen’s tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be greatest dancer in the world.
With Matthew Bourne’s direction and choreography, and Lez Brotherston’s magnificent costume and set designs, a host of dazzling performances are accompanied by music played by the New Adventures Orchestra. Captured at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, these wonderful films reflect the exhilarating sense of interaction in live performance between the audience and dancers on stage exquisitely adapted for the screen.
