Neil Westmoreland

Resident Director & Assistant Choreographer

RESIDENT  DIRECTOR (Nutcracker!, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Car Man, The Red Shoes)

Born in Hull, Neil trained with Skelton/Hooper, Dorothy Stevens MBE and Louise Brown OBE. He completed his training with a full scholarship at English National Ballet School and in his graduate year performed with English National Ballet in Nureyev’s Romeo and Juliet, Ben Stevenson’s Nutcracker and Derek Deane’s Giselle.

Neil then joined the corps de ballet of The Deutsche Oper am Rhein Dusseldorf, before returning to English National Ballet in 1996 under the direction of Derek Deane.

ENB Highlights include: Lord Capulet in Derek Deane’s Romeo and Juliet; (Classical Spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall) Bigonzetti’s XNTricities; Balanchine’s Who Cares? and the Company’s extensive classical repertoire at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and London Coliseum. Neil also choreographed ‘Charoca’ for ENB’s inaugural Choreographic workshops.

In 1999 Neil joined Northern Ballet Theatre and rose through the ranks to Soloist Artist.

Recreating the role of ‘Lieutenant Pinkerton’ in David Nixon’s UK Premiere of Madame Butterfly
‘Romeo’ and ‘Paris’ in Massimo Morricone’s Romeo and Juliet
‘Pip’ in Stephano Gianetti’s Great Expectations
‘Mr. Hyde’ in Morricone’s Jekyll and Hyde
‘Pablo’ in Didy Veldman’s A Streetcar named Desire
‘Escamillo’ in Didy Veldman’s Carmen
‘Quincy’ in Michael Pink’s Dracula

Neil became a freelance artist, teacher and choreographer in 2002 and subsequently joined Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures where his principal performing credits include:
The title role in Nutcracker! (Sadler’s Wells, UK and Asia Tour 2003/4) and 'Dr. Dross' in Nutcracker! (Sadler’s Wells and UK Tour 2012)
'The Prince' in the 10th Anniversary of Swan Lake (Sadler’s Wells, UK and Asia Tour 2004/5)
'The Pilot' and 'The Father' in Cinderella (Sadler’s Wells and UK Tour 2010)
'Prentice' in the 10th Anniversary of Play Without Words (Sadler’s Wells and UK Tour (2012)

In 2005 Neil was awarded The Royal Academy of Dance Professional Dancer’s Teachers Diploma with Distinction.

Teaching credits include: English National Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Elmhurst School for Dance, Laine Theatre Arts, Performers College, Phil Winston’s Theatreworks. The Royal Ballet School’s MA/SA Associate Programme and The London Contemporary Dance School’s CAT Scheme.

In 2011 Neil was a finalist for the inaugural New Adventures Choreographic Award and in 2013 was selected for the 'Dance UK Mentoring Scheme', which develops and inspires future Artistic leaders.

Neil is delighted to be Resident Director and Assistant Choreographer for the World Premiere of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes.
