Cinderella: A Museum Adventure
Cinderella: A Museum Adventure is an exciting collaborative project with the Imperial War Museum to coincide with the UK tour of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella.
As a creative response to Cinderella, a thrilling and evocative love story, set during the Second World War, renowned dance company New Adventures will create three bespoke dance works to be performed at the Imperial War Museum’s sites in London, Manchester and Duxford. The museums will come to life with stories inspired by the local heritage, stories and artefacts, all told in New Adventures unique narrative style.
At IWM Duxford, the dance will be performed by Legacy, a boy’s dance group created following the UK tour of Matthew Bourne’s production of Lord of The Flies. Dancing under the planes, they will capture the lives, excitement and drama of the young men sent to serve at the airfield in the RAF.
At IWM London and North, the project will be intergenerational, with older people integrating with Primary School children and responding to the war time stories and photographs that evoke themes of family, evacuation and community.
The site-specific performances will run throughout the day, alongside workshops for the audience to get involved.
Open to all ages and abilities, New Adventures Dance Artists will lead fun, playful and creative workshops, where visitors get to learn choreography from his interpretation of Cinderella and have the opportunity to create a little something of their own.
PERFORMANCE DATES (times TBC):
14 February 2018 - IWM Duxford
17 March 2018 - IWM North
23 June 2018 - IWM London
We will be holding a taster workshop on Friday 5 January 2018 at The Lowry, Pier 8, The Quays, Salford M50 3AZ for those curious to find out more about our intergenerational performance at IWM North, experience our bespoke movement style and discover how we will work creatively. After this session we will select our performing company.
We are looking for enthusiastic local people aged 55 and over, who have a passion for dance and for history. Technical dance training is not a necessity but some movement experience is desired but not essential. We are really keen to work with both men and women.
Participants from across Salford and the wider North West will work with company dancers to create a dance performance based on Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. In Bourne’s own unique way, the traditional fairy tale of Cinderella has been transformed into thrilling and evocative journey through London during the Second World War.
The performance will take place within the Imperial War Museum North, surrounded by historical artefacts and stories, creating the perfect setting for this very special project.
Rehearsals begin at the end of January with the performance happening throughout the day on Saturday 17 March.
